ZUBR Demands School Construction 11:04, 27/09/2001
ZUBR activists and members of the UCP Youth organization staged a protest against freezing of a secondary school construction in Soligorsk. Last week activists collected more than a thousand signatures of Soligorsk schoolchildren under a petition to A.Lukashenko and the chairwoman of the town executive committee Anna Lavrukevich. They demanded to go on with construction of the school building. After that 20 boys and girls from ZUBR and the UCP Youth gave the petition to the town committee executives.
The petition states that the complex of buildings of the secondary school #13 was started in the first part of the Ninetieth. But only foundation was made. The town executive committee, according to the petition, had managed to find money for building of an Orthodox church, even a special tax was introduced for enterprises in Soligorsk, besides the committee has enough money for various town festivals, Bazaars, concerts of Moscow stars. And no money for building a school.
It’s worth mentioning that the officials promised to breathe life into the construction site during the election campaigns before the parliamentarian and presidential ballot vote.
But yesterday young protesters did not received even promises. The deputy head of the town executive committee said that some buildings where started even earlier than the school and committee have no money for them either.
On receiving such an answer about two dozens of boys and girls began handing out leaflets in different parts of the town, asking parents in Soligorsk to join them in their demand of the pre-election promises realization.
The chairwoman of the UCP branch Larisa Nasanovich and Leonid Marhotka (Belarussian Helsinki Committee) speaking of the protest of the young people said that the authorities should be ashamed of such actions of Soligorsk children, who simply want to be educated in decent conditions.
