Lithuania President Valdas Adamkus Stresses: Belarus Election Rigged 11:11, 28/09/2001
The President of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus thinks that statements of some representatives of the Parliament on the results of the election in Belarus conflict with the direction of the foreign policy of his county. This assertion was made by the press-secretary of the head of state today.
As Radio Svaboda informs, some deputies of the Lithuanian Parliament as a monitors of OSCE mission were present at the presidential election in Belarus. However, three MPs (Social Democrats) went to Belarus on their own, they were invited by the authorities, who sponsored their visit. After the election they made a statement that Belarusian election was democratic and that Lukashenko’s victory is lawful. Their conclusion disagrees with the OSCE declaration, that the election was carried out with enormous violations of democratic procedure.
According to press-secretary, Valdis Adamkus called on the Social Democrats’ leadership to clear up their position, if they agree with the estimation of the election by their three representatives or not.
