World Scholars Demand Liberation of Incarcerated Professor Bandazhevsky
11:20, 13/11/2001

The action of support to professor Yuri Bandazhevsky is being carried out by the world’s scientists. Western scholars, most of whom are the members of the influential organization “Amnesty International”, have been sending for weeks letters to Alexander Lukashenko. The scientists also petition the chair of the Supreme Court and the Interior Minister of Belarus, insisting on the release of professor Bandazhevsky.

As you know, Yuri Bandazhevsky is still kept behind bars. He was sentenced to 8 years over bribery charges. However, his western colleagues call into question the unbiased nature of the trial. Moreover, they are worried about Bandazhevsky’s health condition deterioration.

For instance, the family of the physician Jeremy Kerinas from Vancouver demands to immediately set free professor Bandazhevsky. The Kerinases believe that the Belarusian researcher had been jailed because he managed to prove the deadly impact of radioactive fallout on human health over a long period of time, which couldn’t but spark Belarusian authorities’ anger. As you know, they assert that the “Chernobyl zone” is a safe place to live and have therefore contracted humanitarian aid, earmarked for the purpose.

Doctor Andreas Gobel of Oxford wrote a letter to the Belarusian Interior Minister Vladimir Naumov, calling on him to release Bandazhevsky and present data on his health condition. Doctor Barbara Shope from Germany urges the Minister of Justice to provide medical care to Bandazhevsky, while he’s serving his term.

Letters come from different countries of the globe, including Switzerland, France, Austria, Germany, Great Britain, Canada and Spain.
