Lukashenko Never Went to Kuropaty 11:08, 16/11/2001
Alexander Lukashenko visited yesterday one of the parts of the new ring road, which is currently under construction. Notably, Lukashenko didn’t visit the road section near Kuropaty, which appears to be the most troublesome for the government. The man declared that the works got to be accomplished next year, after which he called on the heads of Minsk and Minsk region Mikhail Pavlov and Nikolai Domashkevich: “You shouldn’t waste any time!” Meantime, the road workers in Kuropaty broke their promise that the works would be held no further than 22 meters away from the road.
The construction works in Kuropaty are going on at full force. Yesterday they removed part of the crosses, erected 22 meters away from the road, being sort of a boundary beyond which no excavations were allowed. The bus, full of riot police, stood on watch at the place for the whole day.
Archeologist Oleg Iov told the following to radio “Svaboda”:
- Yesterday they removed 40 meters of turf from the right side of the road. Today I thought they would take away the rest, but instead they are removing the asphalt and aren’t digging. Most of the tombs are on the hill. If they start lifting the soil there and bump into a tomb, there’ll be immediately seen a black stain from 2 to 4 meters large. They may also see the clothes… Whenever this happens the activities have to be halted immediately.
According to Oleg Iov, the archeologists will watch over the construction until December 31, which had been set as a deadline for the ground works. However, the observation may continue even after that moment.
A TRADITIONAL PRAYER WILL BE HELD AT KUROPATY ON SATURDAY AT 1P.M. THE PRAYER WILL GET STARTED ON SUNDAY AT 3P.M. THE MEMORIAL’S DEFENDERS INVITE ALL THOSE, WHO AREN’T INDIFFERENT TO THEIR OWN HISTORY, TO ENGAGE IN THE PUBLIC PRAYER.
