Soligorsk Miners Go For a Picket 11:13, 16/11/2001
Representatives of the Independent miners’ trade union of the Soligorsk company “Belaruskaliy” held a picket in Minsk on November 16. The workers demanded that the authorities abrogate the taxation of the allowances that a miner receives after his dismissal or redundancy. They likewise protested against the reduction of the income tax rate to 13%.
A month ago the leaders of two trade union organizations, affiliated with the “Belaruskaliy” – Belarusian trade union of petroleum industry workers and the Independent miners’ trade union – addressed with an open letter the “parliamentarians”. On behalf of their 20-thousand strong personnel of “Belaruskaliy” – one of the leading country’s exporters, they urged the MPs to withstand “anti-constitutional amendments into the Labor Code”.
As far as no official feedback came, the Soligorsk miners felt obliged to draw the public attention to their problems by means of staging a protest in the capital.
