Human rights abuses in Belarus in 2001

Information about political assassinations, tortures, arbitrary detentions, biased trials, freedom of speech, peaceful assemblies and demonstrations, faith, as well as the citizens’ right to elect their government, government’s attitude to the international and non-state investigation into the possible human rights violations in Belarus in 2001 is represented in the series of monitorings, prepared by the Charter’97 organizing committee member Ludmila Gryaznova.

Former MAZ Assistant Director General Applied for Political Asylum in Poland

Former deputy director general of the Minsk car-building factory Alexander Yakovlev, who set off to Poland in November 2000, applied for political shelter there. Yakovlev had to do it after the Belarusian procuracy appealed to the Polish authorities with a request to extradite former MAZ director general back home.
