Zinaida Hanchar Addresses Belarusian Diaspora With Appeal to Bring up Problem of Political Terrorism In Belarus
11:10, 04/02/2002

Zinaida Hanchar, the wife of the Belarusian oppositional politician Viktar Hanchar who disappeared without traces more than two years ago, sent an open letter to the Chair of the Rada (Council) of the Belarusian National Republic, Ivonka Survilla. In the letter she reminded that Viktar Hanchar disappeared in Minsk on September 16, 1999. “You know about his role in the Belarusian politics, and why Alyaxandar Lukashenka considered Hanchar his most dangerous political rival”, - writes Hanchar’s wife in her latter. The full text follows.

Dear Mrs. Survilla!

On September 16, 1999 in Minsk my husband Viktar Hanchar disappeared. It is not required to tell you what role he played in Belarusian politics, and why Lukashenka considered Viktar his most dangerous political rival. My husband always promoted the interests of his country and his people. He was incorruptible and principled; he never compromised with his conscience, never looked for his petty mercenary interests.

Unfortunately, there is almost nobody I can address to in our country: efforts of the Belarusian society are fruitless. And it is pointless to rely on honesty and assistance of the present authorities, as the published documents prove that A.Lukashenka, present prosecutor general V.Sheiman and the former Interior Minister Y.Sivakou are implicated to my husband’s abduction. I am certainly not a judge and cannot give a ruling, but actions of the authorities and investigators prove who is answerable for my husband’s death.

Misses Survilla! You enjoy a great authority of the Belarusians all over the world, and I ask you to convey to our fellow-countrymen truthful information about the events that take place at their historic homeland. I would like to ask you personally and the Belarusian diasporas to raise a problem of political terrorism in Belarus before the governments of the countries they live in. Now only world community can force Lukashenka to say the truth about what had happened to my husbands and the other disappeared people.

With your support I would like to address all the Belarusian of the world: please help! Could you advise what it is possible to do in this situation?

One cannot keep silent when in the beginning of the 21th century our country is going to fall in the abyss of terror and blood. Like in 1937.

With best regards and hope,

Zinaida Hanchar
