Missing Politicians’ Relatives Want OSCE to Uphold Independent Investigation Idea 11:22, 04/02/2002
Delegation of the special working group for Belarus of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, made up of Uta Tsapf (Germany), Urban Alin (Sweden) and Helena Demakova (Latvia), who joined them today, was handed on February 4 a letter, sent to the OSCE PA chairman Adrian Severin. The letter had been signed by Svetlana Zavadskaya, Olga Zakharenko, Ludmila Karpenko, Irina Krasovskaya and Tatyana Klimova. The women plead with Adrian Severin to support the idea of launching an independent investigation into the disappearance of some well-known Belarusian politicians. The letter underscores that the creation of the climate of trust, being one of the four essential conditions, worked out by the international community with regard for Belarus, cannot be achieved without locating the missing ones.
The letter’s passage to the OSCE delegates took place during the delegation’s private meeting with the politicians’ relatives. The event attracted wives of Viktor Gonchar, Dmitry Zavadsky, Anatoly Krasovsky, wife and mother of Andrei Klimov. According to Irina Krasovskaya, the meeting was a very fruitful and constructive one. The lady also reported that a few European Parliament’s deputies (MEP), headed by the chair of the EP delegation for Belarus, Ukraine and Moldova Wiersma, sent back their response to the analogous letter into this European structure. As noted by Krasovskaya, the letter of the European politicians states with regret that they haven’t yet received any answer whatsoever from Alexander Lukashenko, although they had addressed him back in December last year.
