Lukashenka Takes School Textbooks Under Personal Control 11:11, 15/02/2002

Alyaxandar Lukashenka intends to personally control publishing of new textbooks for schools in the country. He said this during the session in Minsk on the preparation of new textbooks in the humanitarian public sphere, reports “Interfax”. Lukashenka considers the development of new textbooks to be an issue of “state importance”. In his opinion, “if there are decent textbooks the people will be well-educated.”

More than 20 groups of the human rights defending organization Amnesty International held actions of solidarity with ZUBR movement on February 13 in towns of Germany, Switzerland and New Zealand. Students - human rights watchdogs from Berlin, Karlsruhe, Genf, Bern, Dortmund, Ulm, Rheine, Fribourg, Hamburg, Bochum, Auckland, Dusseldorf, Konigsfeld, Aalen, Thun, Emden, Mossingen and in Burg on Fehmarnm expressed their solidarity with the Belarusian young people. 
One More Charity Mission Leaves Belarus 11:09, 15/02/2002

Leaders of the German charity mission "Weissrussland – Hilfe e.V. Metelen " from the town of Metelen, North Rein-Westphalia land, declared its possible contracts with Pinsk boarding-school for orphans. One of the leaders of the charity, Karl-Heinz Kok stated at the press conference in Germany that it is very hard for charity organizations to work in Belarus because of numerous bureaucratic obstacles and uncoordinated actions of different state institutions. 
Teacher Receives Salary Due to Court Ruling 11:08, 15/02/2002

The teacher of the Hozava basic school Mikalai Ulasevich sued Astravets regional educational department, and judge of the Astravetsky Court Henadz Yankousky supported his plea and obliged educational department to pay salary to the plaintiff every month on 16th day and an advance on the 26th day. The court confirmed the constitutional right of a citizen for timely receiving of the salary that is frequently violated in our country. 
Trials Over St.Valentine`s Day Protesters Underway in Minsk 11:07, 15/02/2002

During the Young Front`s action, that took place yesterday in the Minsk main prospect, the law-enforcers detained 32 dissenters. Most of them were under legal age. The riot policemen even threw into their bus two eight-year old boys. Among the detainees, apart from the YF leader Pavel Severinets, were five more activists: Natalya Kiyko, Serjouk Kastukevich, Artur Finkevich and Serjouk Lisichenok. The names of another few people are the following: Andrei Kozlov, Irina Vyatkina, Olga Chernykh, Anna Solovyeva, Serjouk Gerasimovich, Vasil Parfenkov and Dmitry Ovchinnikov. The under-aged were set at liberty after their parents came to pick them up in the police custody, while their files will be handed over to the commission for juveniles of the town hall. The rest of protesters will be tried later in the day in the Soviet district court of Minsk. 
Belarusian MPs Not Invited to OSCE PA Session 11:06, 15/02/2002

The “National Assembly” won’t be presented at the winter session of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly. Such a decision was passed due to the fact that the “Belarusian issue” isn’t included into the session’s agenda. Plus the “National Assembly” never received an official invitation. At the same time, opposition delegation received an invitation to be present at the OSCE PA session as observers from its president Adrian Severin a few days ago.

More than 50 Zubrs gathered in Homel recreation park on February 14 at 3.30 p.m. A presenter appeared on the stage and congratulated the audience with St. Valentine`s Day. He added that because of illness St.Valentine cannot be present at the holiday and St. Luka would substitute him. A man in moustached mask dressed in white clothes came out to the stage. He declared that he is ready to solve demographic problem and proposed everybody to marry immediately. Despite of the lack of enthusiasm of the audience, the lunatic without delay invited boys and girls and formed several couples, saying that their consent is absolutely unnecessary. Before the `wedding ceremony` the young guys were asked in they had been faithful to the regime. Receiving negative answers, Luka sentenced them to different terms of imprisonment, and united their hands by plastic handcuffs. The action attracted attention not only of passers-by and journalists, but the police force as well.

Such an opinion has been laid out in an answer to the letter of the Belarusian entrepreneurs union, in which they pleaded with the procuracy to set the director free. 
Belarusian Entrepreneurs Union`s Office Burgled Again 11:03, 15/02/2002

Overnight February 13-14 the unidentified burglars again broke into the office of the Belarusian Entrepreneurs Union. This was the forth burglary over the past 2,5 years. Interestingly, the apartment, where the BEU`s headquarters is located, is right opposite the building of the Belarusian Procuracy and almost next to the Central district police department. However, this didn`t stop the burglars. 
Minister and His Deputy Lie Not in Unison 11:02, 15/02/2002

"Money earned through Belarus` sales of ammunition goes undoubtedly into the state budget," - said on February 14 in an interview to BelaPAN deputy Minister of Finance of Belarus Ivan Zayats. According to him "the funds don`t go into any presidential fund." Meantime, Zayats refused to specify the concrete sums, that go into the budget from weaponry sales, nor to comment on their use. "These issues are both state and commercial secret and cannot be subject to discussion," - said he. 
Acting Director Of a Market in Navapolatsk Arrested 11:01, 15/02/2002

In Navapolatsk officers of the local department on economical criminality detained and confined an acting director of the town market Mikalai Aliokhin. He is accused of bribery. The officers of the department detected three incidents of inducement of sums ranging from 50 to 100 USD.
