Belarusian Asylum-Seekers Protest in Belgium, Netherlands, Czech Republic

On Sunday 24 the Belarusian Center in Belgium held a solemn celebration of another anniversary of the Belarusian National Republic. About 50 Belarusian refugees gathered in the cultural center’s office in Antwerp. The meeting was opened with a lecture about the history of the BNR’s proclamation and insight into the current political situation in Belarus. Today, on March 25 there will take place a picket-line in front of the Belarusian embassy in Brussels and Hague (Holland), which is organized by the Belarusian Center in Belgium and its affiliated branch in Holland. The main motto of this action is "Let us get rid of Luka".

Zavadsky’s Relatives Appeal Against Verdict Over Ignatovich’s Gang

Relatives of the missing ORT cameraman Dmitry Zavadsky will submit their protest appeal into the Supreme court of Belarus. They are set to thwart the verdict against two former riot policemen, charged with kidnapping the reporter. According to Dmitry Zavadsky’s family, the jury failed to prove with 100% assurance the implication of Ignatovich and Malik in the matter.

Mikhail Chigir’s Case to Be Considered by Court

Legal action, instituted against the former Belarusian Prime Minister Mikhail Chigir, may soon be submitted to court. Recently Mikhail Chigir and his defense examined the materials of the case, in which they accuse him of tax-evasion and negligence. Defense is set to close the case, for they see no corpus delicti on behalf of the ex-Premier.

Moscow to Turn Down Belarusian Food Supplies Offer

Minsk talks on the centralized export to Moscow of the Belarusian foodstuffs bore no result. The negotiations were carried out by the Ministry of agriculture and foodstuffs of Belarus and the delegation, representing the Moscow government. The sides were reported to adopt the list of Belarus-made goods, allowed to be exported to Russia, reports IA “Rosbalt”.

“Baltika” Not to Withdraw Money Invested In “Krynitsa” For Now

Salary Debt Fells to 30Bln

According to the Ministry of economy, on the basis of the operative data, received from the regional committees, ministries, concerns and other organizations, the salary indebtedness by March 14, 2002, as compared to the February 28, 2002 debt, reduced by 49,8% and thus amounted to 29987,3bln rubles.

Theaters Rocked by Blackouts

The National academic theatre of Yanka Kupala received a warning that in case it fails to pay off its bill for the consumed heat and electricity, the building will be cut off from energy supplies. The theatre’s indebtedness constitutes around 7mln rubles and there’s absolutely no reserves from which they could pay it, report “BDG”.

Andrei Klimau: I Am Intoxicated With Freedom

After four years in prison the Supreme Soviet deputy Andrei Klimau was released. Before visiting his home, he held a press conference in the office of the United Civil Party. After a glass of Champaign he answered several questions of the reporters about his plans for future, and also expressed gratitude to oppositionists, reporters and all indifferent people who have been fighting for his freedom in the years of his imprisonment.

15 Opposition Activists Apprehended

15 participants of yesterday’s Freedom Day rally, who were apprehended yesterday by the Minsk police during the peaceful demonstration, stayed overnight in the special confinement center in the Okrestina street. There the protesters were delivered from the Central police station after they were filed protocols for unsanctioned picketing. This morning will see the start of trials over the detainees. Among those captured by police is Charter’97 coordinator Dmitry Bondarenko.

ANDREI KLIMOV AT LIBERTY!

The away session of the Central court of Minsk passed a decision on Andrei Klimov’s early release. Usually such cases as Klimov’s are due to be dealt with within the week following the concomitant decision of the prison commission. For some vague reasons Andrei Klimov’s turn came not until a month passed, but finally the man was set free. The prisoner left the jail at 9.30a.m. this morning. His wife, children, mother and friends met their loved one at the entrance to the Minsk colony. At the moment he is giving his first press-conference in the United Civil Party’s press-center.

22 People Arrested On Freedom Day In Hrodna

On March 24 on the 84th anniversary of the Belarusian People’s Republic’s proclamation, mass actions took place not only in Minsk. Some other cities of the country celebrated the holiday as well. In Hrodna the celebration ended with arrests of 22 participants. According to the press service of the Belarusian Popular Front, about 500 people took part in unsanctioned meeting. 22 of them were detained, including the chairman of the Popular Front Yuri Hadyka, leaders of the Hrodna branch of the organization Syarheu Malchyk and of the Hrodna branch of the Young Font Vadim Saranchukou. The latter was beaten severely. Besides, the former head of the Peasants’ party Yauhen Kuhin was detained.

Wives Of Disappeared Belarusian Politicians to Appear In European Council

The Committee on the legal questions and human rights of the Council of Europe has come to a decision to invite the wives of the disappeared Belarusian oppositionists to the next sitting of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, the officer in charge of the committee Mr. Svoboda informed the reporter of the Radio Svaboda. It is planned that the information on the cases of the disappeared at first hand will help the MPs get the picture the problem of the political repression in Belarus. The meeting of the European parliamentarians with the wives of the disappeared Belarusian oppositionists is to take place in Strasbourg in April.
