“PAGONYA” SUPPORTERS DETAINED IN GRODNO
11:16, 01/04/2002

In Grodno there took place an unsanctioned picket in support of the “Pagonya” journalists, awaiting trial for alleged “defaming the president’s honor and dignity”. Six young people stood in front of the regional executive council with a huge banner “Together with “Pagonya” and smaller ones “Freedom of speech” and “Mozheiko and Markevich – who’s next?”. Radio Svaboda reports that all the picketers got apprehended by police.

The picketers were visited by the head of the department of public and political information of the regional council Vladimir Omelko, who asked them to go home. Then there pulled up two police vans, which delivered the protesters into the Leninsky police station. They picketed the place for some 20 minutes.

The passer-bys were handed in flyers, readying that the two “Pagonya” employees – Markevich and Mozheiko - can get up to 5 years of jail.
