Andrei Zaitsev’s Father Investigates into His Son’s Suicide
11:05, 03/04/2002

Father of the late ZUBR activist Andrei Zaitsev Yuri and his Gomel attorney Dmitry Ivanishko have been trying hard for over three months to clarify the circumstances, surrounding Andrei’s death. However, their attempts to get information from the official structures bore no result. Nonetheless, reports Radio Svaboda, the eye-witnesses don’t keep silent.

In no time after Andrei Zaitsev’s death his father addressed the KGB department with a claim to tell him who of the KGB operatives sought to recruit his son into secret informants. The KGB department submitted the statement to the Sovetsky district procuracy, which had allegedly clarified the root-cause of the 24-year old man’s demise. The procuracy, though, was interested little in the recruitment attempt and so Zaitsev’s father and lawyer appealed over the matter to the Sovetsky district court, which didn’t consent to consider the case, referring to the lack of authority.

The plaintiffs also petitioned the regional court, but received no response from them. The military commissariat, in which Andrei first met the KGB agent, replied that without the subpoena they can’t find out who summoned Andrei.

Attorney Ivanishko also forwarded his inquiry into the “Gomelobltelecom” on January 10 in order to find out who was the owner of the phone and pager, which Andrei was given for communication. The state phone company never responded to the request, so they had to reiterate their demand.

Meantime, Dmitry Ivanishko began talking to witnesses in order to make the procuracy open the lawsuit over leading Andrei Zaitsev to a suicide. For instance, Gomel resident Andrei Tolochin said that he helped Zaitsev to record on tape his conversation with the KGB agent.
