April 26: Charnobyl Way - 2002
11:18, 04/04/2002

The National organizing committee of the Charnobyl Shljah –2002 have made an address to Belarusian people. It calls everybody who is not indifferent to the problems of Charnobyl, to take part in the “Charnobyl Shljah – 2002” (“Charnobyl Way – 2002”), that is to take place in Minsk on April 26. The action is to start at 5.30 p.m. at Yakub Kolas Square. “We all are hostages of the regime. We do not want to be like this. We want to live in a free democratic country. Free and healthy. Our liberation is in our hands”, - say the organizers of the “Charnobyl Way –2002.

“Charnobyl catastrophe has affected almost every citizen of Belarus by its horrible arm, more than 200 thousand people died on reasons related to radiation. One forth part of the country’s territory is contaminated with long-term nuclear stuffs. 1.84 million people live on contaminated territories, including 500 thousands teenagers and children.

But the president and his government do not say the truth about Charnobyl consequences and do not let anybody to say the truth. Every year the funds for stat program of consequences relief and people’s resettlement, social rehabilitation of the victims are lessened. Resettlement of people from contaminated territories is stopped, these regions are declared clean and safe. The students are compelled to go to work in contaminated areas.

That is why we demand the government:

To join all possible forces and resources to fulfill the Program of minimizing Charnobyl consequences, and first of all, to cure the ill and rehabilitate the territories, to resettle people who live on the territories with contamination over 1.5 Curie.

To stop production of foodstuffs at the contaminated territories.

To cancel decree #8 and all other discriminating decrees that limit humanitarian aid and relief programs with foreign partners”.
