Head Of Hrodna BPF Branch On Hunger Strike In Prison :: Charter'97 :: News

The head of the Hrodna branch of the Belarusian Popular Front Syarhei Malchyk has been on hunger strike for a week already. He was confined for his part in Freedom Day celebration. Malchyk has announced hunger strike in jail, after he was sentenced to 10 days of arrest.

As Radio Svaboda informs, the state of Malchyk’s health was fairly good a short time ago. The head of the regional branch of the Belarusian Helsinki Committee Alyaxandar Antoniuk even managed to visit him. As said by the Antoniuk, the conditions in Hronda jail have changed a little. Now two prisoners are placed to one cell instead of four. They can wash or take a shower if they want, which was banned before. They can smoke in the morning.

Malchyk receives 2 liters of water and newspapers every day and one lemon every other day from his friends. However, every time they have to write a request to the chief of the regional police department.
