APPREHENDED DMITRY BONDARENKO REPORTS FROM POLICE CUSTODY 11:27, 19/04/2002
Radio Svaboda dialed the cellular phone of one of the Protest March “Can’t Live Like That Anymore!” organizers Dmitry Bondarenko, detained during the action. At the moment the man is held in the Sovietsky police station of Minsk and agreed to give us his commentary on what’s going on there these minutes.
-I’m sitting in the Sovietsky police station of Minsk, next to Yuri Khaschevatsky, who has just returned from Prague. Another action organizer Khalezin is also beside me – in total they captured around 100 of us. They keep us in a big hall; half of us are under legal age.
We were thrown in police buses in the prospect. They beat me with truncheons on my head but I tried to cover it with my hands. I didn’t see what they did to others, except Valery Schukin, who was brutally beaten and thrown out of the bus.
They also beat others. I saw one boy with short haircut and bleeding bruises from truncheon on his head. He looked as an underage. Three people were hospitalized after being beaten with police clubs on kidneys and head.
Right now an interesting scene is unfolding before my eyes. They installed a tribune and call us to it by turn. We approach them in pairs and the riot police officers file in the detention protocols, peeping in each other’s notes, for they don’t know how to do it properly.
