FREEDOM HOUSE: Russia, Ukraine, Belarus Restrict Freedom of Media 11:05, 23/04/2002
Last year press in Yugoslavia enjoyed greater freedom, while in Russia, Belarus and Ukraine the authorities continue to restrict the mass media freedom, reads the annual media review, published today by the oldest American human rights watchdog FREEDOM HOUSE.
The document reads that some of the media outlets in Russia are in control of “Gasprom” while in Belarus the state-run media are directly controlled by Alexander Lukashenko. At the same time there are no independent electronic mass media in the country. In Ukraine, the murder of journalist Georgy Gongadze remains unsolved.
