Lukashenko Blames NTV Reporter Over Biased Coverage 11:15, 23/04/2002
Alexander Lukashenko issued a reprimand to the NTV correspondent Pavel Selin for biased report of the April 19 incident, when police broke peaceful protest in Minsk.
RIA “Novosti” reports that speaking before the “national assembly” Lukashenko said that April 19 action had been provoked by opposition. “Those who wanted to get the picture got it,” – stressed the head of Belarus. Lukashenko blamed NTV and personally its correspondent Pavel Selin for pursuing this unfair policy.
As claimed by the head of state, “opposition needed to show a negative picture on human rights abuses ahead of the meeting between Vladimir Putin and George Bush.” Lukashenko assumes that the protest dispersal had to get into the rapport of the US State Dept., so that Bush could convince Putin to exert pressure on Belarus.
