Mutations Abound After Chernobyl
11:01, 25/04/2002, presscenter.ru

The nuclear fuel, which is still preserved in the demolished Chernobyl sarcophagus, produces uncontrolled and unpredictable chain reactions. In particular, there’s a leak of ameritsy, which is by hundreds of times more dangerous than strontium, said in an interview to Izvestia the academician from the Academy of sciences Dmitry Grodzinsky, who has been working on Chernobyl for 16 years. “We’ve many times registered the increase of neutron flows. The fuel masses are heating up in the destroyed reactor. Irradiated anew, they turn into dust and the radioactive substances leak out of the sarcophagus,” – explained the scholar.

In the vicinity of Chernobyl there’s an increasingly great number of mutations. “Before we had miserable amount of mutations – less than 0,01%. But now their number reaches 24%. Local husbandries breed pigs, which are born blind or with the eyes the size of a water-melon. Local residents say that instead of chickens they get something monstrous,” – said the professor.

Moreover, more children with the Daun’s syndrome are being born in the area. “Kids suffer from thyroid cancer a thousand times more often than before the blast. This is true of both Ukraine and Belarus. The irradiation has stopped but genetic mutations and instability continue. This can be clearly seen on plants: we brought them outside of the contaminated zone, but they still produce either dwarfs or giants. The wheat, for instance, has 60% of mutations.”
