State Farmers Go on Strike 11:14, 29/04/2002, Radio Ratsya
Farmers of the state husbandry “Dribinsky” of the Mogilev region decided to hold on April 30 a one-hour long strike in front of the local district committee. The workers demand salary payments for their labor for February and March.
According to the “Mogilevskaya Pravda” newspaper, such disastrous situation with salaries is preserved in most households of the “Dribinsky” district. At two of the farms they only now managed to liquidate the indebtedness for last year’s December. The state owes to the peasants 60mln rubles for January, not counting the February debt.
Salary arrears appeared as a result of no payments on behalf of the processing industry’s companies. Meat and dairy factories owe huge sums to many agricultural farms.
The local executive authorities remind the farmers from the “Dribinsky” that they have to act in compliance with the law, that is to set up a striking committee, receive permission to run their protest and hold a picket in front of the district palace of culture, and not the district committee.
It is difficult to say what the peasants think of that proposal, but it won’t be the first time they go on strike – three years ago they protested at their own farm through publicly pouring on the ground a cistern of milk. In order to thwart the new protest, the state transferred to the “Dribinsky” collective farm 10mln rubles.
