Trial Over “Pagonya” Put Off Again 11:17, 30/04/2002
Trial over the journalists of the shut by the state Grodno newspaper “Pagonya” Nikolai Markevich and Pavel Mozheiko was again postponed for an indefinite period of time, the journalists were told by the Leninsky district court judge of Grodno Tatyana Klimova. This occurred literally four hours after Markevich was handed in summons to appear in court at 11 o’clock May 3 “to engage in the court hearing”.
Judge Klimova was appointed to lead the case of the journalists, charged with libeling the president, instead of Nikolai Sergeiko, who suddenly fell sick on the first day of the trial – April 9. Klimova motivated her postponement by claiming that she fails to catch up with some “drug dealers’ case”.
Klimova is known in journalistic circles for recognizing back in 2001 correspondent Andjei Pisalnik guilty of insulting Lukashenko. Later her decision was cancelled by the court of the higher instance.
