Belarus Develops Contacts with Syria, Blacklisted by US Among “Evil Axis” Rogues 11:12, 08/05/2002
The Foreign Minister of Belarus Mikhail Khvostov welcomed the deputy Foreign Minister of Syria Siba Naser. The sides expressed readiness to further exchange visits on the top level. Mrs.Naser handed in to Mikhail Khvostov personal greetings from his Syrian colleague Faruk Al-Shar, containing an official invitation to visit Syria, which got recently blacklisted by the US among other “Axis of Evil” states, which are potentially able to spread the weapons of mass destruction.
Radio Ratsya reports that the greatest attention during the consultations was paid to the development and intensification of bilateral trade-economic cooperation. There had been reached an agreement to hold on May 27-30 in Minsk a second session of the intergovernmental commission for trade, economic and technical cooperation. They are also negotiating over launching an assembly-line in Syria to produce Belarusian TV sets and phones, on customs issues, tractor’s production, bank contacts, transportation, healthcare, information, agriculture etc.
In the near future Minsk will be visited by a range of high-ranking Syrian officials – president, Prime Minister and some Ministers.
