Trial over Mikhail Chigir to Open Today 11:06, 21/05/2002
Trial over the former Belarusian Prime Minister Mikhail Chigir was scheduled for May 21 in the Frunzensky district court of Minsk. The process will be presided by judge Natalya Varenik, the BelaPAN correspondent was told by Mikhail Chigir’s spouse, who’s also acting as his legal attorney.
The ex-Premier first faced legal action in April 1999, when he engaged in the presidential election campaign, initiated by the 13th Supreme Soviet. The former high official spent eight months in pre-trial incarceration, being charged with power abuse for allowing a payment respite to the “Piask” firm. However, the jury acquitted him as far as the rest of the four episodes. On May 19, 2000 the Minsk city court sentenced Chigir to three years of jail with a two-year sentence delay. Chigir successfully appealed against this verdict in the Supreme court, which cancelled it and forwarded the case to re-examination. As a result, Chigir faced extra charges of criminal negligence and tax-evasion.
