Director of Minsk plat of sparkling wines Mikhail Hardzej was detained yesterday afternoon by officers of the department on economical crimes of the Interior Ministry. He is charged with taking a bribe from one of the Moldovan firms delivering raw materials for production of sparkling wines.
Belarusian procuracy instituted legal action against former president of the “Belgospischeprom” state food concern Viktor Kazeko. Ex-president is charged with power abuse (art.124/3 of the Criminal code), reports Interfax.
Former director of the “Atlant” company Leonid Kalugin and his attorneys familiarized themselves with the materials of the criminal lawsuit. As noted by the attorney Alexander Pylchenko, all actions, with which they charged Leonid Kalugin as criminal actions “are encompassed by the Code for administrative violations”, entailing either economic or administrative sanctions. In this connection the defense again filed appeal on the termination of the legal action. Meantime, a 61-year old Kalugin has been staying in incarceration since November 21, although there passed already half-year since his arrest. Yet many believe that his term in custody will be prolonged.
The 13th Supreme Soviet of Belarus is set to apply to the Parliamentary Assembly of the OSCE with a request to recognize it as the only legitimate legislative body of Belarus. It was said by the vice chairman of the Supreme Soviet Anatol Lyabedzka on Amy 21 at the meeting with the delegation of the PA OSCE special working group on Belarus, the BelaPAN agency informs.
The government of Minsk is not going to allocate strips of land for construction of new “McDonald’s” restaurants. It is connected with “attention of the state to the nation’s health and with active promotion of the native products to the market”. The first vice chairman of Minsk executive committee Mikalai Yarohau said on May 21 at the session of the committee noted that “overseas” kind of fast food is considered “unhealthy and even risky”, especially while teenagers constitute the main part of the McDonald’s customers. A network of national fast foods would become an alternative to McDonald’s, Yarohau underlined.
On May 21 the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development declared that its activities in Belarus would be reduced, as a protest against the counties’ refusal to carry out political and economical reforms. The new strategy of the EBRD announced yesterday at the annual session of the EBRD in Bucharest, was not an unexpected one. The EBRD stated that its follows from analysis of its work in Belarus after the presidential election, that were recognized as undemocratic one.
Relatives of the disappeared and politically harassed Belarusian citizens met with the head of the special OSCE working group for Belarus Uta Tsapf in the evening of May 21. The OSCE official was handed in an appeal by wives and mothers of the missing oppositionists and a plea to raise the issue of involuntary disappearances in Belarus at the forthcoming OSCE Parliamentary Assembly session.
The trial over the former prime minister of Belarus Mikhail Chyhir started on May 21 at the Frunzensky district court in Minsk. The criminal prosecution of the ex-prime minister lasts from April 1999, when Chyhir took part in the presidential election campaign, announced by the 13th Supreme Soviet.
In the daily agenda of the current parliamentary session there are no laws, which present any interest to the OSCE PA working group for Belarus, said during May 22 meeting with the “lower chamber’s” leadership head of the group Uta Tsapf. She stressed that she means the draft laws on the National Assembly of Belarus, a person responsible for human rights and media. “Last time we discussed progress in fulfilling these laws, but from what we learnt before our coming here we realized that the issues, that interest us most have never been included into the daily agenda,” – stated Mrs.Tsapf.
Traders of the Minsk marketplace “Tractor” plan to launch a one-day warning strike. They demand to reconsider the decision of the Minsk city hall to liquidate the market by October 1, 2002.
On May 27-June 2 the Belarusian army will hold large-scale training exercises “Berezina-2002” in the Borisov district (Minsk region), reports ng.ru. They will involve some 8 thousand combatants and hundreds items of military equipment. The troops will be supported by frontier guards, KGB squads and emergency forces.
