The Committee for organized criminality and corruption in Minsk apprehended red-handed when getting a bribe head of the Minsk city hall department for registration and licenses. Alongside with him, they sent to the prison bunks director of one of the Minsk companies, who gave him the money.

Official from Buda-Koshelevo Detained

In the town of Buda-Koshelevo local police officers arrested chief specialist of the department of economy and privatization of the local executive committee. The state official was caught red-handed when getting a $50 bribe. “BDG” newspaper reports that the district committee representatives didn’t refute nor confirm this data. They only said that they know nothing of their man’s arrest. However, in the local police station they confirmed the fact as true.

Lukashenka Reduces KGB Staff

In keeping with Lukashenka’s decrees the quantity of the KGB staffers has been reduced by 10% already, the head of the organization Leanid Eryn said on May 27 to the journalistsin Minsk. He noted that the a reduced amount of officers has not affected the work of the departments, first of all operative ones”.

Directors Lose Peace

Minsk city hall chair Mikhail Pavlov called to ensure that directors of the companies-debtors don’t sleep peacefully until they clear off their indebtedness. The situation with the payments into the municipal budget over the past six months remained tough. The companies still owe some 21mln dollars, which is around one third of the capital’s budget. Leader of the local executive called such situation an “inadmissible luxury” and proposed to the districts’ administrations, tax police and procuracy to deal with the situation.

Private Companies Ousted from State Facilities

Private companies are being ousted from their rented space in the state institutions. The previously reached rent agreements are being abrogated. Thus, they execute the order, passed in mid-February by Alexander Lukashenko: by June 1 all private businesses must be removed from the occupied state premises.

Belarusian MTS Starts Connecting Up Clients In July

The second operator of cellular communication of GSM standard in Belrus, Belarusian-Russian joint-stock company “Mobilnye Telesistemy” starts connecting up clients to the network in June this year, said general director of the company Eduard Makariev. “By this time cellular communication would be available in Minsk”, - he said. As said by him, now a switchboard for 100,000phone numbers is being installed now.

Visas to Poland to Cost No More Than 10-12 Euro

Polish entry visas fro citizens of Russia, Belarus and the Ukraine will cost no more than 10-12 Euro, sia don Saturday in Gdansk Polish minister of the Interior Kszisztow Janik. “We shall make the cost of visas affordable for citizens of Russia, Belarus and the Ukraine, - the minister said. – They must not cost more than 10-12 Euro. We would make everything to alleviate the receiving of visa, but it would be necessary to have one in a passport”, - the agency ITAR-TASS informs.

KGB Raises Charges Against OSCE

OSCE AMG is interfering with the Belarus’ internal affairs, said on May 24 the KGB chief Leonid Erin following his meeting with the deputies of the “house of representatives”. KGB chief’s meeting with the “parliamentarians” was held within the framework of the lower chamber’s confidential meeting, at which they discussed issues of the state’s foreign policy. As said by head of the Belarusian KGB, at the “parliament’s” session they were given examples of the former OSCE AMG head Hans-Georg Wieck’s activities. Erin characterized them by saying that “Wieck followed the easiest road, communicating more with the opposition part of the society and less – with the pro-governmental one.”

FM Seeks to Leave OSCE AMG Issue Aside

Concomitant Belarusian bodies possess information about the former OSCE AMG head Ambassador Wieck’s espionage activities. The Minister said this in an exclusive interview to “Interfax”. At the same time he underscored that the problems between the Belarusian government and the OSCE AMG haven’t been caused “by Wieck’s personality, although the man did a lot in order to undermine confidence towards OSCE”. According to Khvostov, the post of the head of field missions must be occupied by the “civilians, rather than the former military, who used to belong to the security services”. He added that it is inadmissible for the Belarusian side to view their relations with the OSCE, the Council of Europe, European Union via the OSCE AMG prism.

Defense Training to Commence in Belarus

Today Belarus will see the opening of the complex tactical military exercise “Berezina-2002”. According to the deputy head of the chief headquarters of the Belarusian army Petr Tikhonovsky, they will bear exclusively defensive character. The military exercise will involve units of the Belarusian troops, frontier guards, police, KGB and emergency forces. In total, they plan to engage roughly 8thsd military and 200 items of the military machinery. The course of the training will be monitored by the military attache, accredited with the Defense Ministry of Belarus, as well as the observers from the neighboring states.

Belarus Readying to Develop Cooperation with South Africa

41,1% of Belarusian Companies Operate At a Loss

The number of unprofitable companies in the Belarusian industry amounted on April 2, 2002 to 1012 or 41,1% of the general amount of industrial enterprises, “Interfax” was told in the Ministry of statistics and analysis. By March 1, 2002 the index of losses constituted 44,6% of the overall number of industrial enterprises, which are currently registered (by March 1, 2001 – 31,6%).

Relation Of Belarusians: 59 Pensioners Per 100 Working People

According to Minister of Labor and Social defense Uladzimer Lokis, in Belarus the relative amount of pensioners is 59 pensioners per 100 workers. As said by him, today one fourth of Belarus’ citizens are pensioners. The retirement fund is supported by insurance payments of workers, the number of which has dropped in the last ten years, while the number of pensioners has considerably grown. As a result, Lokis said, the situation in this sphere would worsen, as the people of after-war generation, when birth-rate was high, would reach the retirement age.
