REGIME REWARDS ITS LACKEYS
11:07, 27/06/2002

The Grodno region prosecutor Vasily Litvinov, who acted in capacity of an accuser at the “Pagonya” journalists process and demanded 2 and 2,5 years of jail for them, is promoted to the general’s rank, while judge Tatiana Klimova, who was placed in charge of the process, is appointed deputy chair of the Oktyabrsky district court of Grodno, reports Russian newspaper “Izvestia”.

As you know, Nikolai Markevich was sentenced to 2,6 years of “freedom restriction”, while Pavel Mozheiko – to 2 years of the same punishment (art.367/2 of the Criminal code). The journalists disagree with the verdict and plant to appeal against it in court. Mozheiko and Markevich will serve their terms under constant police supervision.

September 4 issue of “Pagonya”, which never got published, was about to contain articles, in which the authors were calling on the electorate to vote against Lukashenko at the ballot. However, the law-enforcers seized part of the print run right in the publishing house and banned to disseminate the remaining copies. Nonetheless, procuracy instituted defamation suit for libeling the president.

Today the attorneys of the closed Belarusian newspaper “Pagonya” Nikolai Markevich and correspondent Pavel Mozheiko will appeal against the sentence, passed by the Leninsky court of Grodno.
