Ales Pushkin in Police Custody Awaiting Trial 11:22, 04/07/2002
Famous Belarusian artist Ales Pushkin, apprehended yesterday for staging a performance in Minsk downtown, is currently kept in the Moskovsky police station of Minsk. Charter’97 press-center was told in police that Ales Pushkin is indicted for violating article 166 of the Administrative code (insubordination to policeman’s lawful order). Today, after a one-day detention, Ales Pushkin must be delivered to the Moskovsky district court of Minsk.
On July 3 police arrested famous Belarusian artist Ales Pushkin for his attempt to remind Belarusians that there exist two viewpoints on the Great Patriotic War and interpretation of the July 3 date. The action got started at 6.30p.m.: Pushkin placed puppets on the white sheet, washed them and put near the portraits of the leaders of the Belarusian anti-communist resistance – Mikhas Vitushka and Vsevolod Rodko. At 6.47p.m. four law-enforcers captured Pushkin, handcuffed him, beat up and threw into their van.
