Sentence to Mikhail Chyhir to Be Pronounced Today 11:08, 23/07/2002
On Tuesday in Frunzenski District Court of Minsk a sentence is to be passed to former prime minister of Belarus Mikhail Chyhir. He is charged with negligence and tax evasion. Ex-prime minister can be sentenced to three-year imprisonment with confiscation of property.
Representative of “Belagroprombank” sued Chyhir for sanctioning a $1 mln credit for construction of a new bank office while Chyhir worked a chairman of the bank board.
Besides, Chyhir is accused of tax evasion while he worked in Moscow in 1998-1999. Allegedly he was to pay taxes about $4.5 thousand to Belarusian treasury.
Ex-prime minister of Belarus does not plead guilty. He says that the decision to give credit was made collectively by the board of the bank, and taxes were paid by him always in time. Chyhir is convinced that this suit is politically motivated.
