Belarusian FM Accuses US Ambassador of Facts’ Distortion 11:07, 07/08/2002
Belarusian Foreign Ministry accused the US ambassador in Belarus Michael Kozak of “groundless aspirations” to transform the dispute around McDonald’s into a conflict with foreign investors. Commenting on the situation, head of the US diplomatic agency said in an interview to the American Associated Press that this is one of the many occurrences when the Belarusian authorities infringe on their agreements with the foreign investors. At the same time, he underscored that “investors must bear in mind that it is unsafe to invest their capitals in this country”.
In his turn, the Belarusian FM spokesman Pavel Latushko called such an interpretation incorrect. According to him, from time to time there can arouse problems between the organizations, which is no sign of the poor investment climate in Belarus. “Such allegations are totally ungrounded,” – he said.
A few months ago Minsk authorities ruled to cancel the construction of new McDonald’s restaurants in the Belarusian capital, as “not fitting the Belarusian traditional cuisine”.
