What Are You Doing, Teachers?
11:17, 08/10/2002, Valery Schukin, “Narodnaya Volya”

“Narodnaya Volya” office received a phone call from some lady, who said that the authorities are depriving the teachers of their daily salary, which goes to cover the construction of the national library. But the teachers have no resources for such charity.

I asked the caller about her name, but she preferred to remain anonymous. She only said that she works for the 134th school of the Leninsky district of Minsk. The schools’ headmasters, she said, were warned that if they fail to collect money from teachers, they would have to donate their own salaries instead.

If a teacher signed a petition on the transfer of his “daily bread” for the construction of library, there’s no way he or she can get it back. Let such a person blame himself for this.

Dear teachers! Why are you teaching our kids to humiliate before rascals who got to the high echelons of power? Our predecessors – my own teachers – told me something totally different: “It is better to die for the truth than to live on one’s knees”.

What are you doing, people?

Last year many fearful teachers of youth put their signatures below the protocols, testifying to the “elegant victory”, claimed by Lukashenko at the presidential elections. Today they silently agreed to transfer fees for the construction of library. What will come next?
