EU Critical of Belarusian Regime 11:49, 17/10/2002
The European Union once again issued a strong-worded statement, regarding the deteriorating human rights situation in Belarus. RIA “Novosti” reports that Denmark produced a special statement on the matter. The country is acting as current EU chairman. Denmark called on Alexander Lukashenko “to stick to his international commitments as far as the freedoms of press and speech are concerned”.
“Censorship and state assaults at free media outlets in Belarus provoke serious concerns in Europe. EU deeply regrets the repressions, unleashed against the Belarusian journalists, trade unions and other outspoken critics of Lukashenko”. EU urged the Belarusian authorities to revise the provisions of the Penal Code, touching upon the freedom of media and speech. The statement cites some concrete examples, testifying to human rights abuses in Belarus. One of them being a judicial verdict, passed against journalist Viktor Ivashkevich for alleged accusing Lukashenko of corruptibility. The full text of the statement will appear on our site as soon as we get it.
