Brain-Drain in Belarus Turns Massive 17:37, 17/10/2002
In view of this, president of the National Academy of sciences of Belarus Mikhail Myasnikovich deems that “compensation of losses, provoked by brain-drain from Belarus, can be a matter of discussion in the European or international organizations”, said Myasnikovich at the October 16 press-conference, reports BelaPAN.
Myasnikovich is convinced that artificial stimulation by western countries of emigration of scholars from Belarus must be reimbursed to the local educational institutions and the state itself. According to him, the issue lies in the sphere of the Belarusian national interests, as far as the schooling of one doctor of sciences costs $600thsd, while the departure of scholars abroad takes on massive character. The brain-drain problem will be discussed at the early November Assembly of young researchers. Myasnikovich underscored that they would step up measures to prevent the leaving of scientists. For instance, the Academy’s bureau plans to create the most favorable conditions for the scholars in the country. This will especially be the case with the new generation of scientists.
