PACE Commission on Disappearances Starts with Filing Inquiry to “MPs” 11:29, 21/10/2002
PACE Commission, chaired by the deputy of the Russian State Duma Sergei Kovalev, which is dealing with the political disappearances phenomenon in Belarus, forwarded a concomitant inquiry to the Belarusian “national assembly”, Sergei Kovalev told Radio Svaboda on October 18.
Prominent Russian human rights advocate Kovalev said that the Commission, though realizing the specifics of the problem in question, starts its activities with a traditional address to the official authorities, in particular to the country’s parliament. “Posing questions to the authorities, meeting the officials and not only them will be one of the key elements of our job. There’s little chance that we will find anyone of the missing. However, there’s a greater possibility that we will know exactly what is being done to locate them and we could help to do it more enthusiastically and effectively”.
