Belarusian Authorities to Shut OSCE Office in Minsk 11:31, 21/10/2002
At the session of the OSCE Permanent Council in Vienna Belarusian representative Viktor Gaisenok declared that the Belarusian side insists on the shutdown of the OSCE AMG mission in Minsk, demanding that the Permanent Council formally shuts the mission.
The group was operating on the basis of a mandate, established by the OSCE Permanent Council, which hasn’t been cancelled yet. In course of the last few months official Minsk proposed to reconsider the mandate but OSCE saw no reason for that. Accreditation period of the last remaining OSCE AMG official in Minsk Alina Josan expires on October 29, 2002. During this year the Belarusian authorities evicted from the country all foreign observers, for the Foreign Ministry denied prolongation of visas and diplomatic accreditations to them.
