New Defamation Case for Insulting Lukashenko 17:09, 21/10/2002
Central district procuracy instituted legal case against 29-year old Oksana Novikova for her alleged slander of Alexander Lukashenko. Private entrepreneur Oksana Novikova was detained on October 17 for disseminating flyers near the Oktyabrskaya square of Minsk and, following a search, was arrested, reports BelaPAN .
In a ruling on the institution of legal action, composed by the investigator of the Central district Maksim Podzyarei, it is written that “On October 17 Oksana Novikova was disseminating near her house leaflets, which contained defamation and heavy crimes accusations of the Belarusian president”. The detective ruled to institute legal action against the female activist under article 367/2 of the Penal code “defamation of the Belarusian head of state”. The woman may well face up to five years of jail or freedom restriction.
Oksana Novikova was released only 58 hours after her detention, despite the fact that she has a small daughter.
