FIFA Threatens Belarus with Heavy Sanctions 16:38, 19/12/2002, Sport Today
Member of the FIFA executive committee, doctor of law Joseph Mifsud wanred Belarus against the possible state’s interference into the activities of the Belarusian Football Association. He mentioned this at the December 18 evening meeting of the association’s bureau. Clarifying his position, Mr.Mifsud referred to the concomitant FIFA provisions, which Belarus is obliged to observe. “You may do whatever you feel like, but FIFA has many times applied sanctions, even suspension, against the violators,” – said the FIFA official.
Mr.Mifsud arrived in Minsk in order to monitor the course of the BFA election conference, due to take place on December 19. The question about the state’s interference emerged after Lukashenko said he would personally engage in the conference, while one of the candidates for the BFA head is the secretary of the Security Council Gennady Nevyglas. Moreover, non-state media representatives are deprived of the right to be present at the conference, which will be attended by Alexander Lukashenko.
