Street in Baranovichi to Be Renamed After Lukashenko?
16:43, 19/12/2002, Ales Gorbach, Radio Svaboda

It appears as though Baranovichi will become the first town, where Lukashenko street will appear. Such initiative was voiced by the team from the “Baranovichimezhraigas” company. It is not that they adore the achievements of the Belarusian leader. In fact, they simply lost any hope to bring into normal look the street of “50 years of VLKSM”, where their company is located and thus determined to give it another name.

Under the old custom they put asphalt on the central streets and then invite orchestra for a solemn opening. The street of “50 years of VLKSM” is located in the town’s outskirts. Gas company’s workers are sick and tired of walking upon the mud and puddles for decades and constantly listening to the clients’ complaints. They many times contacted local authorities, but always received void promises.
At the recent meeting of the labor crew of the company it was decided to address the town authorities with the initiative to rename the street into the street of the 1st Belarusian president Alexander Lukashenko. The gas workers are convinced that in this case the authorities will quickly find money to improve its condition. At the same time, it can be dangerous for the local authorities to refuse giving such a name to the street.
