Polish Ambassador To Belarus Apologizes For Situation On The Border 12:28, 09/01/2003, Interfax Information Services, B.V
Poland`s ambassador to Belarus has offered his apologies for the situation that evolved on the Belarussian-Polish border, Belarussian television reported in the early hours of Tuesday.
The ambassador said that 18 months ago Poland suggested modifying a bilateral agreement dealing with the amount of fuel imports to its territory, which was signed with Belarus. He said that Warsaw "made a mistake when it imposed restrictions on diesel imports starting January 1, 2003, without introducing any changes to the agreement." Poland is reported to have managed to temporary resolve the conflict situation on the two countries` border by indefinitely suspending its restrictions on fuel supplies to its territory. This helped to reduce by half the 10-kilometer long line of trucks that had formed on the border by Monday afternoon. About 30 convoys and more than 30 trucks cross the border within one 12-hour shift. The Polish ambassador noted that "the repeal of the restrictions on fuel imports to Poland will remain in force until Belarus and Poland reach an appropriate agreement." tm.
