Procuracy Set to Halt Investigation into Gonchar, Krasovsky’s Abduction Case
11:46, 09/01/2003

Detective of the Minsk city procuracy Vladimir Chumachenko told Radio Svaboda that he intends to halt investigation into the disappearance of Viktor Gonchar and Anatoly Krasovsky. This decision hasn’t been passed yet, though the concomitant documents are already being prepared, said Vladimir Chumachenko. He explains his desire by the futility of efforts to successfully finish the case in the near future.

At the moment, the only outcome of the investigation is the confession of the fact that Gonchar and Krasovsky never went into hiding themselves but rather had been kidnapped as a result of the violent actions.
During the investigation period the procuracy has twice replaced the detectives but each time to no avail. The lawyer of relatives of the missing ones Garry Pogonailo says he is not surprised. He figures that the officials from the top echelons of power will never let Chumachenko disclose truth on the matter. “They surely control the investigation and will never let Chumachenko execute his duties according to his authority. The man himself realizes pretty well that as soon as he does something against their will, he would run into trouble,” – deems the attorney.
Irina Krasovskaya declared that the wives of the disappeared would never consent to the cessation of investigation. Along with Zinaida Gonchar they will insist on the resumption of the investigation activities in full volume.
