Belarus Takes Northern Korea’s Side
11:44, 09/01/2003

Belarus “upholds the swift solution of the North Korean crisis by peaceful means and the prevention of possible escalation of conflict”. “Rosbalt” correspondent was told on Wednesday in the press-center of the Belarusian Foreign Ministry that this position of the Belarusian side was presented during the extracurricular session of the directors’ board of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

The session raised the problem with the non-fulfillment by the Korean National-Democratic Republic of a treaty on the application of guarantees in connection with the agreement on the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons. According to the Belarusian Foreign Ministry, the report of the director general of IAEA Mohammed Al Baradei reads that the recent unilateral actions and statements, passed by the Korean leadership – launching nuclear stations, unfolding an uncontrolled nuclear program, as well as the expulsion of IAEA inspectors from the country – clearly contradict the international commitments, which North Korea bound itself with. Moreover, it has been stressed that IAEA efforts, targeted at the solution of the deadlock, weren’t welcomed by the Korean top leadership.
The session passed a resolution, which contains a set of urgent requirements on the normalization of cooperation between North Korea and IAEA in the sphere of guarantees. “The Republic of Belarus, being a consistent supporter of the non-proliferation of nuclear arms, assumes that the unconditional application of the guarantees’ regime is a necessary prerequisite for ensuring stability and international security worldwide,” – reads the official Belarusian FM’s statement.
