Grodno Opposition Denied Access to District Commissions 12:51, 16/01/2003
BPF representatives addressed the authorities with a protest appeal. None of the 33 members of their party were included into the district commissions on the elections into the City Hall. BPF Council believes that this testifies to the executive’s violation of Electoral Code.
As deemed by one of the local party leaders Sergei Malchik, this also reveals the regime’s intentions. “Refusal to include a single BPF candidate speaks for itself. The regime will repeat the scenario, used at the last presidential ballot. They are readying to count the votes as it pleases them. And so one cannot really count on the objectiveness of the voting’s results,” – told the politician to Radio Svaboda. Sergei Malchik said that the city BPF Council determined to continue participation in the election campaign. A few persons were nominated into the district commissions by some other parties and democratic organizations. According to the preliminary data, the authorities also prevented them from penetrating into the commissions’ make-up. The department of justice embarked on the examination of documents of the regional branch of the Belarusian Helsinki Committee. Its leader Alexander Antonuk assumes that this was done in order to hinder access to the district commissions for the three BHC representatives.
