District Commission’s Formation Over 12:54, 16/01/2003
Outcomes of this stage of the election campaign will be made known only on January 17, Radio Svaboda was told by the secretary of the Central Electoral Commission Nikolai Lozovik. He explains the delay by saying that they need to gather and process the data, emanating from more than 6000 constituencies.
As concern the political parties, they are also accumulating data at this stage. However, there also appeared first troublesome signs. For instance, according to the chairman of the Belarusian Social-Democratic Party (Narodnaya Gromada) Nikolai Statkevich, the party singled out 25 candidates, due to be nominated into the district commission’s composition in the Oktyabrsky district of Minsk. None of them, however, was registered. As said by the member of the political executive committee of the United Civil Party Mikhas Pliska, they also denied registration to two candidates, running for the seats in the Central district’s commissions. Leaders of the Party of communists of Belarus and the Liberal-Democratic Party told Radio Svaboda that they possess no verified data on how their candidates are being registered.
