Academician Radim Goretsky Beaten Up 14:23, 20/01/2003
Delegates of the assembly of Minsk intelligentsia, which convened on January 19 in the Palace of arts, demanded resignation of the Minsk law-enforcement brass in connection with the repeated acts of violence over the prominent cultural and scientific figures of Belarus. In their statement the participants of the assembly raise “indignation and deep concern” over the beating on January 17 in Minsk of a famous Belarusian geologist, academician of the National Academy of arts of Belarus and Russia Radim Goretsky.
The authors of the statement report that the man was brutally beaten at the entrance to his house, when returning home from the meeting of the organizing committee on marking the 85th anniversary of the Belarusian Popular Republic. The scholar is now hospitalized in the 9th Minsk clinics. The authors call into question the possible finding of the perpetrators of this assault, “for all previous beatings and disappearances in Belarus remain uninvestigated”. The document also lists the previous cases of beating in Minsk of a prominent writer and World War-2 veteran Arthur Volsky, filmmaker Yuri Khaschevatsky, theatrical editor Valery Mezynsky and PhD Adam Maldis. The text of the statement also reads that the repeated harassments of the well-known Belarusian intelligentsia testify “to the physical and moral terror unleashed as a result of the professionally conspired activities of the special services”. The delegates appealed to the procuracy, Interior Ministry and KGB to urgently investigate into the matter and punish the guilty ones. 206 representatives of Minsk intelligentsia engaged in the meeting.
