EU Marks Deepening Belarus` Self-Isolation :: Charter'97 :: News

The EU Committee for foreign affairs stressed the deepening isolation of Belarus, calling on the Belarusian authorities to hold political and economic reforms in order to reach a concomitant agreement with the European Union.

A special report, approved these days by the committee, was initiated and prepared by Pedro Marset Campas. The Spanish deputy Marset Campas is also the head of the Confederative Group of the United Europeans Leftists, as well as member of the Committee for foreign affairs, human rights, public security and defense policy of the European Parliament.

In Marset Campas’s report the author criticizes Alexander Lukashenko’s authoritarian style of rule and his overly repressive policy. The document makes mention of the impoverishment of the Belarusian population, while the Belarusian parties in opposition are called not to waste chance for uniting efforts and mobilizing the public opinion ahead of the upcoming March local elections.
