15 Doctors, 35-50 Professors Emigrate from Belarus Annually
15:17, 28/01/2003

Every year 15 doctors and 35-50 professors leave the country in search of permanent residence and employment abroad, said the first deputy chairman of the Committee for science and technologies of the Cabinet of Ministers Vladimir Nedilko during the January 27 press-conference in Minsk, dedicated to the Day of science, which is marked on the last Sunday of January. “These are huge figures for Belarus, if we bear in mind that usually the people leave the country in the most active age,” – said Nedilko.

According to him, the leadership of the National academy of sciences of Belarus and the Committee for science and technologies of the Cabinet of Ministers pass measures on thwarting the “brain-drain” in the country. The state program-2002 “Scholarly personnel” is called to help compensate the losses, which occurred due to emigration, deems the specialist. The problem’s solution must also be contributed to a large degree by the program of the material-technical base’s development in science.

Nedilko confessed that the most effective tool in fighting the “brain-drain” is “leveling the living standard in Belarus to that of the developed countries”, though this goal, according to him, cannot be attained in the nearest future.
