Belarusian Problem Raised in Strasbourg
10:52, 29/01/2003, UCP press-service

On January 27 the PACE sub-committee for Belarus held deliberations on the situation in Belarus. The Belarusian side was represented at the debates by the chairman of the United Civil Party Anatoly Lebedko, leader of the unregistered United Social-Democratic Party Valentina Polevikova and UCP deputy head Yaroslav Romanchuk. The invited representatives of the “national assembly” didn’t show up at the hearings, leaving their booked seats vacant.

Representatives of the Belarusian democratic parties described in detail the current state of affairs in the country, making a presentation of the possible actions by the international community in the future. The discussion also attracted the head of the sub-committee for Belarus Jonas Chekuolis, Political Committee’s rapporteur for Belarus Wolfgang Berendt, rapporteur for Belarus of the Committee for human rights Vatslav Stankevich and other MEPs.
On Thursday the sides will look into the disappearances of famous politicians in Belarus at the special meeting of the sub-committee for human vanishings in Belarus, chaired by the prominent Russian human rights advocate Sergei Kovalev. Belarusian opposition will be represented there by Irina Krasovskaya and Yaroslav Romanchuk.
On the same day there will be held the meeting with the CoE secretary general Walter Shwimmer and head of the PACE Secretariat Bruno Haller.
