Valery Levonevsky Denied Registration As Candidate for Deputy 14:48, 03/02/2003
Chairman of the Striking committee of Belarusian entrepreneurs Valery Levonevsky was denied registration as candidate for the deputy into the city and regional council of deputies. Valery Levonevsky was nominated through a signature collection motion. According to the entrepreneur himself, he was denied registration under formal and trumped-up reasons: in his income declaration he didn’t put the word “none” in a paragraph on incomes, credits and subsidies. Instead, Levonevsky left empty spots.
Levonevsky claims that there are no official instructions on how to fill out such declarations. When a person contacts tax bodies for clarifications, they respond that they can’t give any explanations on declaration and one must address electoral commissions instead. Electoral commissions, in their turn, claim that they have no idea and one should inquire tax bodies instead.
Moreover, according to Levonevsky, electoral commission on registering him as candidate for the deputy presided on January 30, while the chairwoman of the Central Electoral Commission of Belarus Lydia Ermoshina announced the outcomes of nomination on January 29.
“Electoral commissions of Belarus serve the purpose of legitimizing official arbitrariness in denying registration to “wrong” candidates”, - deems the chairman of the Striking committee of the Belarusian entrepreneurs Valery Levonevsky.
