UCP Upholds People’s March “For Better Life!”
11:18, 03/02/2003

At the meeting of the UCP political council last weekend it was determined that they would support the national rally People’s March “For Better Life!”, scheduled for March 12. Anatoly Lebedko said that in an interview to the UCP press-center: “Our party decided to uphold the Congress of intelligentsia of Belarus and People’s March “For Better Life!” due to take place on March 12. Why will we participate in that march? In the end of last year UCP stressed that we got to carry out less street rallies but with a greater number of participants. And so we came up with a proposal to move the autumn events to the next year and insisted on social-economic motivation of actions. As far as the afore-mentioned action meets these criteria, we will support it, including in the format of a de-facto underway election campaign.”

UCP press-center also reports that the basic theme of the political council’s deliberations was preparation to the elections and situation analysis in the regions. The party nominated 201 candidates into the local deputies, all of whom submitted their registration applications. “Following this stage, - said Lebedko: we will hopefully have some 120 runners, including those with whom we don’t have full clarity so far. Around 80 people failed to pass registration, which is a huge percent of denials. Many of these cases are flagrant. We voiced a special statement on the matter”.

UCP political council approved the agenda of events for the year 2003 in the format of the national campaign “Want to know the truth” – one of the party’s traditional and priority actions. There was also passed a statement concerning the suspension of investigations into the disappearance cases of Zakharenko, Gonchar and Krasovsky.
