Newly appointed OSCE head of mission in Belarus Ebergard Haiken raised hopes that relations between official Minsk and OSCE, which deteriorated over the past years, will turn better. Haiken said that in an interview to the “Deutche Welle” last Friday.
On Friday official Minsk finally consented to Ebergard Haiken’s appointment as the new chief of OSCE mission in Minsk. Doctor Haiken told “Deutche Welle” that he plans to set off to Minsk on February 9 and get down to his regular office routine the next morning. When asked about his priorities, the new OSCE mission’s head answered this:
“Our mandate envisages the following priorities: building democratic institutes, strengthening the rule of law and developing ties with the civil society. Then there comes economic cooperation and environmental projects. It’s also worth mention that the mandate also includes monitoring, that is watching over the processes, which are underway in the country, as well as reporting on the matter to the OSCE headquarters in Vienna.
