EU Must Examine Trade Union Rights Abuses in Belarus 11:23, 03/02/2003
International Confederation of free trade unions demanded from the European Union to investigate into the trade unions’ rights violations in Belarus. RIA “Novosti” reports that world’s leading trade union association, enrolling 158mln workers and civil servants in 150 countries of the globe, addressed with a concomitant official letter the European commissar on trade Pascal Lami.
The Confederation points out that “violations of fundamental rights of trade union movement in Belarus aren’t at all compatible with the European systems of preferences”. The letter underscores that the authorities of Belarus “suppress any signs and forms of independent trade union movement”, overlooking recommendations of the International Labor Organization (ILO).
Confederation’s secretary general Mr.Reeder met in Brussels with the president of the Congress of democratic trade unions of Belarus Alexander Yaroshuk and vice-president Nikolai Kanah, claiming support to the country’s independent trade union movement in the country.
