“Upcoming elections into the local councils will be undemocratic, whereas the elected bodies of local power will not have due legitimacy,” – IA “Rosbalt” was told by the representatives of the United Civil Party of Belarus, commenting on the local elections campaign, which is currently underway in the country.
As mentioned in the statement, passed by the UCP on February 1, the authorities refused to uphold proposals of opposition parties, targeted at the democratization of the Electoral code. “Moreover, the Central Electoral Commission, not entitled to interpret legislation, oftentimes passes decisions, which clearly contradict the norms of the Electoral code and seriously restrict the rights of the participants of electoral process”, - reads the document. They also strongly criticized the very process of the electoral commissions’ formation.
According to the UCP representatives, “intermediate outcomes of the election campaign testify to the fact that the authorities won’t stop applying unfair methods against candidates for the deputies from democratic bloc.
